Why we choose cedar?

At Backyard Biz Cedar Company, we believe the materials you bring into your backyard matter.

That’s why we choose real cedar for our planters, birdhouses, trellises, and outdoor products.

Naturally Built for the Outdoors

Cedar is naturally resistant to:

  • rot

  • moisture

  • insects

  • weather exposure

Unlike many softwoods or synthetic materials, cedar is designed by nature to handle outdoor environments season after season.

Beautiful Natural Character

Every cedar board has unique:

  • grain patterns

  • knots

  • tones

  • textures

Over time, cedar naturally weathers into a soft silvery-gray patina if left untreated — or it can be stained or sealed to maintain its warm natural color.

No two pieces are exactly alike.

Better for Gardens & Wildlife

We believe natural materials belong in natural spaces.

Cedar helps us create products that feel at home in:

  • pollinator gardens

  • backyard habitats

  • porches & patios

  • bird-friendly spaces

  • family gardens

Our goal is to provide long-lasting alternatives to mass-produced plastic products whenever possible.

Lightweight Yet Strong

Cedar offers an excellent balance of durability and weight.

It’s strong enough for long-lasting outdoor builds while remaining lighter and easier to move than many hardwood alternatives.

Our reinforced cedar planter designs are built with drainage, airflow, and structural integrity in mind

Crafted With Purpose

We don’t just build products.
We build pieces designed to:

  • support nature

  • inspire outdoor living

  • encourage conservation

  • bring warmth and character to backyards

Every product is handcrafted with care right here in New England.

Rooted in nature. Crafted with heart.

Why We Prefer Cedar Over Plastic

We believe gardens and outdoor spaces should work with nature — not against it.

Cedar Is a Natural Material

Cedar is real wood grown from forests, not manufactured from petroleum-based plastics. It naturally breaks down over time and can often be reused, repurposed, or recycled more easily than many synthetic materials.

Every cedar planter also breathes naturally, helping create a healthier environment around plant roots.

Better Airflow & Drainage

Wood naturally allows for better temperature regulation and airflow compared to many plastic containers.

Cedar planters can help:

  • reduce trapped heat around roots

  • improve drainage performance

  • reduce excess moisture buildup

  • create healthier root environments

This is especially important during hot summer temperatures when black or thin plastic containers can overheat quickly in direct sunlight.

Less Heat Retention

Plastic containers can absorb and trap significant heat, especially darker plastics left in full sun. Excess heat can stress roots and dry soil faster.

Cedar naturally stays cooler and provides a more stable environment for:

  • flowers

  • herbs

  • vegetables

  • pollinator plants

Reducing Plastic Use

Mass-produced plastic garden products are often:

  • short-lived

  • crack-prone from UV exposure

  • difficult to repair

  • commonly discarded after a few seasons

Our goal is to provide longer-lasting alternatives that reduce unnecessary plastic waste in outdoor spaces.

Built to Age Naturally

Instead of becoming brittle or breaking down into synthetic waste, cedar ages naturally over time and develops a weathered character many gardeners love.

Natural imperfections, grain patterns, and aging are part of what make real cedar unique.

Thoughtful Outdoor Living

At Backyard Biz Cedar Company, we believe outdoor products should feel connected to nature, wildlife, and the spaces they live in.

That’s why we continue choosing cedar:
naturally beautiful, durable, and designed for real outdoor living.

How Cedar Is Harvested

Cedar harvesting begins in carefully managed forests where mature cedar trees are selected for harvest. Responsible forestry helps maintain healthy forests while allowing cedar to remain a renewable natural resource.

Selective Harvesting

Many cedar forests are harvested using selective cutting methods, where only certain mature trees are removed rather than clearing entire forests at once. This helps:

  • protect wildlife habitats

  • encourage new forest growth

  • reduce soil erosion

  • maintain healthier ecosystems

Milling & Drying

After harvesting, cedar logs are transported to sawmills where they are:

  1. cut into boards and lumber

  2. sorted by size and quality

  3. dried to reduce moisture content

Drying helps stabilize the wood and prepares it for outdoor building applications.

Why Cedar Stands Out

Cedar naturally contains oils and compounds that help resist:

  • rot

  • insects

  • moisture damage

Because of these natural properties, cedar often requires fewer chemical treatments than many other outdoor woods.

A Renewable Material

When forests are responsibly managed and replanted, cedar remains one of the more sustainable building materials available for outdoor products.

At Backyard Biz Cedar Company, we value natural materials and believe quality outdoor products should work with nature — not against it.

Rooted in Nature. Crafted to Last.

At Backyard Biz Cedar Company, cedar is more than a material — it’s part of our commitment to building outdoor products that feel natural, last through the seasons, and support healthier outdoor spaces.

From responsibly sourced wood to handcrafted construction, every piece is designed with durability, beauty, and nature in mind

We choose cedar because nature already designed it to last — strong, beautiful, renewable, and meant for outdoor living. Every piece we build is rooted in craftsmanship, inspired by the outdoors, and created to bring natural beauty back into everyday spaces.
