Our Story

Backyard Biz Cedar Company™ was built from a lifelong connection to nature.

Long before the first planter was ever built, countless hours were spent outside exploring forests, streams, wetlands, mountains, and backyards across New England. Learning to identify birds by their calls. Watching pollinators move from flower to flower. Catching fish in small creeks. Turning over logs to find insects and salamanders. Learning how every plant, insect, bird, and animal plays a role in the ecosystem around us.

That connection to nature became the foundation of everything we do.

As time went on, one thing became impossible to ignore:

Wildlife is losing habitat everywhere.

Old forests disappear. Native plants are replaced. Pollinator populations decline. Nesting spaces become harder to find. Even many products marketed as “wildlife friendly” are often designed more for decoration than for the actual needs of the animals using them.

Too many birdhouses are built to look good hanging on a porch wall — without proper ventilation, drainage, predator protection, correct dimensions, or species-specific entrance holes.

Too many habitats are created for people to buy, not for wildlife to safely survive in.

That belief helped shape Backyard Biz Cedar Company™ into more than just a woodworking business.

Our goal is to combine craftsmanship, education, conservation, and outdoor living into products that genuinely support nature.

We build with purpose:

  • birdhouses designed around real species needs

  • cedar planters that encourage pollinator gardening

  • wildlife-focused products built for long-term outdoor use

  • educational content that helps people better understand native ecosystems

We believe conservation starts close to home.

A single native flower planter can feed pollinators.
A properly built birdhouse can help a nesting pair succeed.
A backyard can become a small habitat instead of just a lawn.

Every product we build is rooted in the idea that people and wildlife should thrive together.

What started with exploring nature and building a few cedar planters one early spring has grown into a mission focused on education, conservation, and creating outdoor spaces that matter.

Building habitats. Inspiring conservation.

Craftsmanship Rooted in Nature

Meet the Owner — Adam Betz

Behind Backyard Biz Cedar Company™ is a lifelong connection to nature, craftsmanship, and the outdoors.

Growing up in New England, some of my earliest memories were spent outside — exploring the woods, identifying plants and wildlife, fishing local waters, and learning to appreciate the natural world firsthand. That love for nature became more than a hobby; it became part of who I am and the foundation of this company.

My passion for carpentry started young while watching my father work with wood. He was incredibly skilled with his hands, and I was always fascinated by the way raw lumber could become something functional, strong, and beautiful. Over the years, I learned by watching, helping, and slowly building projects of my own. That appreciation for craftsmanship, attention to detail, and pride in building things the right way still guides every product we make today.

Another major influence came from time spent with my grandmother. Some of my favorite memories are helping her pull weeds from her rock gardens, working side by side outdoors for hours at a time. Those moments taught me patience, hard work, and a deep appreciation for plants, gardening, and the simple peace that comes from caring for nature.

My professional experience further deepened that passion. I spent years working in the annual and perennial greenhouses of a large nursery, where I gained hands-on experience caring for plants and understanding what it takes to help them truly thrive. During that time, I also learned about trees, shrubs, tropical plants, soil health, watering needs, and the importance of creating healthy growing environments.

In addition to horticulture, my time working in construction taught me the importance of structural integrity, durability, and practical engineering. That experience gave me a strong understanding of how quality materials, proper reinforcement, airflow, drainage, and sound construction techniques all work together to create products that last for years outdoors.

Backyard Biz Cedar Company™ was built from all of those experiences combined — a love for the outdoors, respect for wildlife and conservation, hands-on horticultural knowledge, and a passion for creating handcrafted cedar products built with purpose.

Today, every planter, birdhouse, trellis, and garden product we build reflects those roots:

  • handcrafted with care

  • inspired by nature

  • built for long-term durability

  • designed with both plants and wildlife in mind

  • rooted in education, conservation, and craftsmanship

This is more than woodworking to me.
It’s a way to stay connected to the outdoors, share that passion with others, and help create spaces where gardens, people, and wildlife can thrive together.

About Us

At Backyard Biz Cedar Company™, everything started with a simple project in early spring.

After a long winter in New England, I wanted to bring life back into my own backyard. I started building cedar planters for myself — something natural, durable, and built better than the plastic options I kept seeing everywhere.

What began as a few handmade planters quickly turned into something bigger.

Friends, family, and neighbors started asking where the planters came from. Soon I was building more, improving the designs, and learning how to create products that were not only beautiful, but practical and long-lasting too.

From the beginning, the goal was simple:

Build outdoor products that feel connected to nature.

Today, Backyard Biz Cedar Company™ creates handcrafted cedar planters, window boxes, railing planters, trellises, birdhouses, and wildlife-focused products designed to help people grow gardens, support pollinators, and enjoy their outdoor spaces.

We believe cedar is worth choosing because it is:

  • naturally durable

  • naturally rot and insect resistant

  • long-lasting outdoors

  • safer and more natural than many plastic alternatives

  • beautiful as it ages and weathers over time

Every product is built with attention to drainage, airflow, strength, and longevity because we believe outdoor products should last season after season.

But this company is about more than woodworking.

It is about slowing down, reconnecting with nature, supporting wildlife conservation, and helping people build outdoor spaces they are proud of.

From a few cedar planters built for my own backyard one early spring… to a growing small business rooted in craftsmanship and conservation — thank you for being part of the journey.

Rooted in nature. Crafted with heart.

What Sets Us Apart

At Backyard Biz Cedar Company™, we believe outdoor products should do more than simply look good — they should serve a real purpose for both people and nature. Our products are inspired by a lifelong connection to the outdoors and built around education, conservation, and long-term craftsmanship. Every planter, birdhouse, and habitat product is thoughtfully designed with durability, function, and the actual needs of wildlife in mind. We are passionate about helping people reconnect with nature while creating outdoor spaces that support pollinators, birds, and healthier ecosystems close to home.

What Makes Us Different

  • Nature-First Design
Our products are designed around the real needs of wildlife, pollinators, and healthy ecosystems — not just appearance.

  • Education & Conservation Focused
We believe education creates impact. We share knowledge about native plants, pollinators, bird species, and habitat conservation to help people make a difference in their own backyards.

  • Functional Wildlife Products
Many birdhouses on the market are decorative. We focus on proper ventilation, drainage, predator protection, airflow, and species-specific sizing that birds actually need.

  • Handcrafted Cedar Construction
We use naturally durable cedar because it is rot resistant, insect resistant, long-lasting outdoors, and ages beautifully over time.

  • Built for Longevity
Our products are designed with drainage, airflow, structural reinforcement, and weather resistance in mind so they last season after season.

  • Support for Pollinators & Native Wildlife
From cedar planters to habitat products, we aim to encourage pollinator gardens, native planting, and healthier backyard ecosystems.

  • Small Business Craftsmanship
Every product is handcrafted with attention to detail, care, and pride — not mass-produced assembly-line products.

  • Rooted in Real Outdoor Experience
Our designs come from years spent exploring forests, streams, gardens, and wildlife habitats — learning directly from nature itself.

Building habitats. Inspiring conservation.
